Discovering The First Vogue
The oldest existing fashion journal has been rediscovered in Auswatch, Germany.
Matthaeus Schwarz was a 16th Century accountant with a flair for fashion.
Since there was no photography at that time, he commissioned his portraits. In all of his portraits, Schwarz has dawned different outfits. He started this at the age of 23 and went on till 63 to have his portraits done. At the end, since his son refused to carry on this tradition, Schwarz compiled the portraits which had a narration on the bottom, into a book.
This book has been in the Herzog Anton Ulrich-Museum in Braunschweig, Germany. It wasn’t really studied until recently by Dr Ulinka Rublack.
