Emperor’s Army In Formation
Qin Shi Huang was the first Emperor of China. He was obsessed with mortality and wanted to continue his rule after death. To have a strong army with him, he began digging a huge underground necropolis right from his first year of reign.
This necropolis has various pits with more than 8000 soldiers, 700 horses and chariots, high commanding officers as terracotta statues standing in formation for battle. Besides a full fledged ready for battle Terracotta Army, he also has kept various artefacts, musicians and animal statues in the necropolis. There is an incomplete pit too suggesting that he died before the entire plan was completed.
Although the Emperor’s tomb itself isn’t yet excavated, the Terracotta Army is located close to it.
It seems that when this project was underway, the Emperor employed special artisans.
Every Terracotta soldier, official and horse rider is dressed in the appropriate uniform of the Emperor’s rule and has different hairstyles, ears. Each part of the statues was made separately and fitted, making each one as real as possible. Furthermore, the army is assumed to have been painted. But the paint has been absorbed over time by the Terracotta.
Emperor Qin Shi Huang also built the Great Wall of China….
