The Cursed Diamond
The Kohinoor is one of the most contraversial diamonds to ever exist. About 5 nations claim its ownership and all in all, the legend goes that this infamous diamond is cursed.
“He who owns this diamond will own the world, but will also know all its misfortunes. Only God, or a woman, can wear it with impunity.” Such is the curse not only a known fact but also proven by history.
Kohinoor was first found in Andhra Pradesh, South India as a 793 carat colourless diamond. This diamond exchanged many hands. In India itself, the diamond changed ownership from the Kakatiya Dynasty of South India through to the Delhi Sultanate, the Moguls and lastly the Rajputs. In the Treaty Of Lahore, the ownership of the diamond landed with the then Queen Of England- Queen Victoria.
Prince Albert (Queen Victoria’s husband) didn’t like the shape of the colourless diamond and ordered it to be cut in 1852. The diamond cutter’s work is of exact precision and startles even modern techniques!
Since then the Kohinoor has adorned the crowns of the Queens Of England. Now rests of the Queen Mother’s crown and can be seen in the Tower Of London, UK.
For the past decades, the Kohinoor has been demanded back from India, Pakistan, Iran, and Afganistan. However, the British Government have claimed that it was legally gifted to the Queen.
